Lost has a unique approach to their TV soundtrack. Most TV shows--particularly low-budget--will opt for a synthesised soundtrack. Lost however, opted for a live orchestra to provide the shows backing track. And who else to compose this than the award winning Michael Giacchino.

We caught up with congested of Audibly Lost (the Lost blog dedicated to all things audio-related) and asked him for a few words on Giacchino.

"Every year Giacchino brings something new to the table, both on Lost, and in the cinema" he said, "His work on Lost is constantly evolving, with his scores often carrying entire scenes. Season 5 was no exception, impressive since we are this far into the show", which sums up an attitude which seems to resonate throughout the cast and crew of the show.

Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) has spoken of how Giacchino's score can hold a scene together. "There'll be something where I'm like, oh god I should've played that stronger and I should've done this ... and the music does it. The music kinda' lifts you, and you're like, thank you!"

"I mean, sure, the scene can make your eyes water; but you throw the music on it, you're gonna' cry." says Jorge Garcia (Hurley), echoing these sentiments.

Notable Projects

Giacchino's work doesn't stop at the amazing original soundtrack for Lost, his work has made its way into film and video-games too, as congested also spoke about:

"The music he composed for Up and Star Trek further exemplify his range of talent. Here are two movies, released in the same month, that bring out totally different emotions through their soundtracks."

Lost (2004)
Season one, two, three and four at Amazon.
The Incredibles (2004)
Available at Amazon.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Available at Amazon. Samples available on SoundtrackNet.
Cloverfield (2008)
While the movie had no score, Giacchino did compose the theme for the movie end credits called 'Roar!', which appears on the Cloverfield soundtrack, "Rob's Party Mix".
Star Trek (2009)
Available at Amazon.
Up (2009)
Various MP3s available at Amazon and Disney.

And since we're counting to season six, we'll leave you with a few more words from Audibly Lost's congested.

"A lot of Lost is resting on Giacchino's shoulders, so I've got high hopes for his [season six] scores, and I'm sure he'll deliver."
