Posted on November 06, 2009 with 87 days until Lost returns.

Special thanks to user Pauly for the great idea for today's thing to do.

If you've been keeping up with our Lost rewatch, you'll have just watched the season one episode 'Born to Run' (1x22). The episode, which delves into Kate's past and finally puts to rest the meaning of the mysterious toy plane.

In the episode, we learn that Kate and her childhood sweetheart Tom dig up a time capsule in which she placed the toy plane as a child. This happens just hours before she causes the death of Tom, and which furthers her apparently deeply routed nature to be on the run.

In the spirit of Kate and Tom's childhood endeaveur, the thing to do today is to create your very own time capsule. And don't worry, if the idea of getting your hands dirty doesn't appeal to you, we've got some other ideas for you.

What to use

Regular Box

Of course, if you are going to make your own time capsule then you can use any box that won't perish over a short amount of time. The best thing would be some kind of tin or non-biodegradable plastic container.

The authentic approach

If you're looking to go the extra mile and really follow in Kate and Toms footsteps, then you'll want to get your hands on a (red) 1980s 'New Kids on the Block' lunchbox, the very same lunchbox that Kate and Tom stole (and which was inevitbly paid for by Jacob) in the season five finale 'The Incident'.

While hard to find, there seem to be passing bids for various versions of the lunch box on eBay. You can pick up an orange one right now, or just keep your eye out for further available lunch boxes in the future.

The cheap-kate

If you're short for cash, or just want to play along but without getting your hands dirty, then why not try Tizmy--the free online time capsule?

The idea is simple: you sign up (although when we tried, it wouldn't accept our 108things.co.uk e-mail as valid, for some reason), add your memories, videos or photos, medical details (such as blood group, allergies, etc.) and share these with friends and family -- or lock them away for future generations to discover.

What to put in it

Of course, it being your time capsule, you can put whatever you like inside, however here's a list of what Kate and Tom put in their time capsule:

  • Toy-plane
  • Audio message recorded to casette tape
  • Signed baseball
  • West Hills baseball cap

If you decide to create your own time capsule--either IRL or online, let us know what you put in it and share your tips with others below.
